My name is Joel McDonald, and this blog is committed to discussing options to reduce emmissions put into the environment.

I’m not talking about trading in your Hummer for a Prius, or riding your bike to work. I want to be more preemptive than that. What I’d like to do is convince folks to consider buying a more expensive home that is closer to work. All the money you save by not commuting 30 to 50 miles a day to work could simply be put toward a more expensive home that is closer to work.

To prove this point, I developed this “cost of commuting” calculator. Try it out for yourself & see how much more house you could afford if you didn’t commute as far to work.

Did you know that you could live in a $100,000 more expensive home by living 5 miles from work versus 25 miles away? It’s true — in fact, when you factor in your time, fuel, and wear & tear on your car, you’d still save over $200 a month by living in a $400,000 home versus a $300,000 home 25 miles away!
